Rhode Island Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements
🔴 ELECTRICAL LICENSE REQUIRED: Rhode Island requires comprehensive electrical licensing for all electrical work. Telecommunications work has separate licensing requirements.
Current Requirements (2024-2025)
Electrical and Telecommunications Licensing
Rhode Island requires electrical licensing through the Department of Labor and Training for electrical installations. Telecommunications work may qualify for separate telecommunications licensing under different regulations.
Key Requirements:
- Electrical Work: Requires Certificate A or B
- Telecommunications: Separate license available under Chapter 5-70
- Code Standard: National Electrical Code 2020 Edition
- Continuing Education: 15 hours required
- Statewide Authority: Valid throughout Rhode Island
License Classifications
Electrical Licenses:
- Certificate A - Electrical Contractor: Can pull permits and operate business
- Certificate B - Journeyperson Electrician: Can perform electrical work
- Telecommunications License: Separate classification for data/comm work
Experience Requirements
Journeyperson (Certificate B)
- Experience: 8,000 hours (4 years) as registered apprentice
- Training: Approved apprenticeship program
- Documentation: Work history verification required
Contractor (Certificate A)
- Total Experience: 12,000 hours (6 years)
- Plus: 2 years holding Journeyperson license
- Business Knowledge: Demonstrated contractor capability
