🔴 LIMITED ENERGY TECHNICIAN LICENSE REQUIRED: Oregon requires a Limited Energy Technician license for low voltage systems work under 100 volt-amperes.
Current Requirements (2024-2025)
Limited Energy Technician License
Oregon requires a Limited Energy Technician (LET) license through the Oregon Building Codes Division for individuals performing work on systems under 100 volt-amperes. The state follows the 2023 Oregon Electrical Specialty Code.
Key Requirements:
- Voltage Threshold: Systems under 100 volt-amperes
- License Term: 3 years, renewable October 1
- Minimum Age: 17 years to apply
- Code Standard: 2023 Oregon Electrical Specialty Code
- Statewide Authority: Valid throughout Oregon
License Classifications
Oregon offers two classes of Limited Energy Technician licenses:
License Classes:
- Class A (LEA): Includes protective signaling systems (fire alarms, security)
- Class B (LEB): Excludes protective signaling systems
Systems and Work Covered
Class A (LEA) - Authorized Systems:
- Fire Alarm Systems: Detection and notification
- Security Systems: Burglar alarms and access control
- Communications Systems: Data and telecommunications
- Audio/Video Systems: Sound and video distribution
- Nurse Call Systems: Healthcare communication
- Class 2 and Class 3 Circuits: Power limited systems
Class B (LEB) - Limited To:
- All systems listed above EXCEPT fire alarms and security systems
- Cannot work on protective signaling systems
License Requirements
Experience Requirements - Class A (LEA)
- Primary Path: Complete approved apprenticeship program
- Minimum Age: 17 years to apply for license
- Training: Structured education through approved program
Experience Requirements - Class B (LEB)
- Work Experience: 4,000 hours in the trade
- Classroom Training: 288 hours of approved instruction
- Documentation: Employer verification required
Examination Requirements
- Written Exam: Required for both Class A and Class B
- Exam Content: Oregon code, NEC, and trade knowledge
- Passing Score: Minimum percentage set by Building Codes Division
