Missouri Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements

🟢 EXEMPT: Most low voltage work in Missouri is EXEMPT from electrical contractor licensing requirements under RSMo § 324.915

Low Voltage Work Exemption

Under Missouri Revised Statutes Section 324.915, contractors engaged in the design, installation, erection, repair, maintenance, or alteration of the following are exempt from electrical contractor licensing requirements:

  • Class 2 or Class 3 remote control circuits
  • Signaling or power-limited circuits
  • Optical fiber cables or other cabling
  • Communications circuits (including raceways)
  • Voice, video, audio, and data signal systems in residential or commercial premises

What This Covers

The exemption applies to most typical low voltage installations, including:

  • Security and surveillance systems
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Access control systems
  • Telecommunications and data networking
  • Audio/video systems
  • Structured cabling

Statewide Electrical Contractor License (Optional)

Missouri does offer an optional statewide electrical contractor license through the Division of Professional Registration. This license:

  • Must be recognized by all political subdivisions (cities/counties) in lieu of local licenses
  • Requires $500,000 liability insurance
  • Requires passing a standardized, nationally accredited electrical assessment examination
  • Requires bonding with each political subdivision where work is performed

Local Licensing Considerations

Important notes about local requirements:

  • Cities and counties may still have their own licensing requirements
  • Some municipalities may require permits for low voltage work
  • Always check with the specific jurisdiction where you plan to work
  • Local licenses may be required regardless of state exemptions
