Mississippi Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements
Important Note: Mississippi requires a Communication Systems/Low Voltage Electrical license for most low voltage work. This license specifically excludes alarm systems, which require separate licensing.

License Types
Mississippi offers several relevant licenses through the State Board of Contractors:
- Communication Systems/Low Voltage Electrical License - For low voltage electrical work (excludes alarms)
- Telecommunications License - Separate classification for telecommunications contractors
- Alarm Systems License - Required separately for security and fire alarm work
Project Value Threshold
- License required for electrical projects of $10,000 or more
- Projects under $10,000 do not require state licensing but may require local permits
Qualification Requirements
Experience
- Must satisfy experience requirements set by the Mississippi State Board of Contractors
- Specific years of experience vary by license classification
Examination Requirements
All applicants must pass two exams:
- Mississippi Law & Business Management Exam
- Open-book format
- 120 minutes duration
- 50 questions (must answer 35 correctly to pass)
- Covers: estimating, bidding, lien law, financial management, labor laws
- Communication Systems & Low Voltage Exam
- Based on National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Covers: sound and communication, services, feeders, branch circuits, overcurrent protection, conductors, raceways, grounding, power supplies
Scope of Work
Permitted Work
Communication Systems/Low Voltage Electrical license allows:
- Installation, repair, and upgrade of low-voltage electrical systems
- Light fixtures (low voltage)
- Internet and phone systems
- Home entertainment systems
- CCTV and video surveillance
- Access control systems
Critical Restriction: This license does NOT permit work on alarm systems (fire or security). Alarm work requires a separate Alarm Systems License through the State Fire Marshal's office.
Insurance and Financial Requirements
Liability Insurance
- Minimum $300,000 per occurrence
- Minimum $600,000 aggregate
- Mississippi State Board of Contractors must be listed as certificate holder
Financial Documentation
- Audited financial statement prepared by CPA within last 12 months
- Three reference letters (including one from a banking institution)
- Proof of employment for each qualifying party
- Certificate of good standing from Secretary of State (for corporations, LLCs, LLPs)
Application Process
- Complete application through Mississippi State Board of Contractors
- Submit required financial documentation and references
- Provide proof of insurance
- Schedule exams through PSI Services (psiexams.com or 855-557-0619)
- Pass both required examinations
- Pay applicable licensing fees
Important Exemptions
- Companies licensed for electrical work by MSBOC are exempt from separate alarm system licensure for wire/conduit installation only
- Projects under $10,000 may not require state licensing but check local requirements
- Primary power sources of 60 volts or greater require full electrical contractor license
Renewal and Continuing Education
No continuing education is currently required to renew the Communication Systems/Low Voltage Electrical license in Mississippi.
