Minnesota Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements
🟢 Good News: Minnesota has a specialized Power Limited Technician (PLT) license for low voltage work on Class 2 and Class 3 circuits.
License Requirements
Individual Licensing
Power Limited Technician (PLT) license is required for individuals performing low voltage electrical work on technology circuits and systems, including:
- Fire alarm systems (with restrictions)
- Security systems
- Video surveillance systems
- Access control systems
- Communication systems
- Audio systems
Business Licensing
Technology Systems Contractor (TSC) license is required for companies performing low voltage work. The responsible licensed individual must be either a licensed PLT or master electrician.
Qualification Requirements
Experience Requirements
- 3 years of experience working for a licensed contractor
- Must be registered as an unlicensed worker during experience accumulation
- Experience must be directly related to technology circuits and systems
Examination
- Pass state-administered PLT examination
- Open book exam based on 2023 National Electrical Code
- Covers safety, electrical codes, and industry standards
Scope of Work and Restrictions
Permitted Work
- Class 2 and Class 3 circuits as defined by NEC Articles 725, 760, 770, and 780
- Technology circuits and systems up to 30 volts
- Fire alarm systems in one- and two-family dwellings
- Remote control, signaling, and alarm systems
Important Restrictions: PLTs cannot work on Class 2/3 circuits that control other electrical systems, circuits in electrical cabinets with unprotected higher voltage circuits, hazardous locations, critical care areas in healthcare facilities, or commercial fire alarm systems.
License Maintenance
Continuing Education
- 16 hours of continuing education required prior to renewal
- License expires every 2 years from issue date
Supervision Requirements
- Licensed PLT may supervise up to 3 unlicensed individuals
- All workers must be registered with the state
Application Process
How to Apply
- Register as unlicensed worker ($14 fee)
- Complete 3 years of qualifying experience
- Apply online through Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry
- Schedule and pass the PLT examination
- Pay required licensing fees
