Georgia Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements

🔴 License Required: Georgia requires statewide licensing for all low voltage contractors, with four distinct license classifications.

Current Requirements (2024-2025)

The Georgia State Board of Low Voltage Contractors, operating under the Secretary of State's Licensing Division, regulates low voltage contractors per Title 43, Chapter 14 of the Georgia Code. All low voltage contractors must obtain a license before bidding or performing any work.

License Classifications

Class LV-U (Unrestricted)

Unrestricted license permitting all types of low voltage work including alarm systems, telecommunications, and general systems. No limitations on project size or scope.

Class LV-A (Alarm Systems)

Restricted to alarm and general system low-voltage contracting. Includes burglar alarms, fire alarms, access control, and related security systems.

Class LV-T (Telecommunications)

Restricted to telecommunication and general system low-voltage contracting. Covers telephone, data, network cabling, and communication systems.

Class LV-G (General Systems)

Restricted to general system low-voltage contracting. Includes audio/video, intercom, paging, and other low voltage systems not classified as alarm or telecommunications.

Key Requirements:

  • Voltage Threshold: Systems under 50 volts AC or 30 volts DC
  • Project Value: No minimum threshold - license always required
  • License Duration: 2 years (biennial renewal)
  • Statewide Authority: Valid throughout Georgia

Authorized Low Voltage Systems:

  • Security Systems: Burglar alarms, intrusion detection, monitoring
  • Fire Alarms: Detection, notification, and suppression control systems
  • Access Control: Card readers, biometric systems, electronic locks
  • Telecommunications: Voice, data, fiber optic cabling (Cat 5/6/7)
  • Audio/Visual: Sound systems, intercoms, PA systems, displays
  • CCTV/Surveillance: Video cameras, recording systems, monitors
  • Nurse Call Systems: Healthcare communication and alert systems
  • Home Automation: Smart home systems, IoT devices
  • Energy Management: Building automation and control systems

Important Note:

Low voltage contractors cannot perform any work requiring an electrical contractor license, including connections to building power systems exceeding 50 volts AC or 30 volts DC.

License Requirements

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Experience: 1 year (2,000 hours) in the category of licensure
  • Educational Credit: Technical school courses credited up to 6 months maximum
  • Documentation: Three letters of reference required
  • Verification: Work history affidavits from employers or contractors

Examination Requirements

  • Trade Exam: Specific to license classification (LV-U, LV-A, LV-T, or LV-G)
  • Business & Law Exam: Incorporated into the trade exam
  • Format: Open book exam administered by PSI Services
  • Continuous Testing: Available year-round with reduced wait times (2024 update)
  • Passing Score: 70% minimum
  • Allowed References: NEC, Georgia codes, tabbed and highlighted permitted

Application Process

  1. Submit application to Georgia State Board of Low Voltage Contractors
  2. Provide proof of experience and three reference letters
  3. Pay application and exam fees
  4. Receive exam approval (allow 10 business days)
  5. Schedule exam with PSI Services upon approval
  6. Pass required examination(s)
  7. Receive license upon successful completion

Financial Requirements

Fees and Insurance:

  • Application Fee: $100
  • Examination Fee: $115 per exam
  • Initial License Fee: $150
  • Renewal Fee: $150 (biennial)
  • General Liability Insurance: $300,000 minimum recommended
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if 3 or more employees
