North Carolina Low Voltage Contractor License Requirements
🔴 License Required: North Carolina requires the SP-FA/LV (Special Restricted Fire Alarm/Low Voltage) license for low voltage contractors.
Current Requirements (2024-2025)
The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors regulates low voltage work through the SP-FA/LV special restricted license classification. This license is specifically designed for contractors working with fire alarm and low voltage systems.
SP-FA/LV License Overview
The Special Restricted Fire Alarm/Low Voltage (SP-FA/LV) license authorizes installation, maintenance, and repair of low voltage wiring and directly related wiring systems. Unlike limited or intermediate licenses, SP-FA/LV has no project value restrictions.
Key Requirements:
- Voltage Threshold: Systems 50 volts or less
- Project Value: No dollar limit restrictions
- License Duration: 1 year (annual renewal)
- Statewide Authority: Valid throughout North Carolina
Systems and Work Covered
Authorized Low Voltage Systems:
- Fire Alarm Systems: Detection, notification, and control systems
- Security Systems: Burglar alarms, intrusion detection
- Access Control: Card readers, electronic locks, biometric systems
- CCTV/Surveillance: Video cameras, recording systems
